Scratched, and glossy red mahogany.
Blech!
After rubbing a deglosser on it I painted it with three coats of white primer.
Two coats of Aspen White paint.
A few scraps of barn wood...
We cut the barn wood to size and used wood glue to attach it. After 24 hours I removed the clamps and filled the side cracks with wood fill to make the board look seamless.
After sanding the wood fill I gave the top two thick coats of polyurethane.
Mr. Wright then built a box base to give the fireplace more height. These electric fireplaces are so dinky in size.
The box was painted a dark brown, then primed and painted the same color as the fireplace.
After a little distress sanding and a coat of polyurethane on the whole thing it was done!
Here's a look at the finished top:
It's residing in our master bedroom. We still need to remove a section of the molding so it rests flush with the wall. I forgot to take a picture of it turned on; it looks lovely so I will have to do that. I also still need to find some simple decor for the mantle, and maybe a rug for right in front.
Anywho, I love how it turned out, and it's a great addition for our bedroom!

wow!!! as usual! :) You with all your projects have inspired Mike and I. Mike picked up a "Hoosier Cabnet" at a yard sale that we are going to refinish. Wish us luck...we are going to need it! Ha!
ReplyDeleteNow, what would you need a fireplace in the bedroom for?
ReplyDeleteKatie, you are relentless! I am going to put this fireplace on your front porch right next to those birds of yours!
ReplyDeletefreaking amazing. I can't wait to see it in person.
ReplyDeleteWow! That turned out amazing! It looks like it came right out of new England.
ReplyDeleteThis turned out so well! I love that you put the box on the bottom to give it some height and that you added character with the barn board.
ReplyDeleteGreat blog. Your fireplace is really awesome. I love that you built a box for it to rest on to help with the scale. Can I make a suggestion? Next time you're in the mood for an easy DIY, you should add some simple molding to the bottom box inset as a rectangle (to coordinate with the square shaped molding on the top part). A long rectangle on the bottom would make that look like one cohesive piece. It's great as is though. Just a thought. You can get inexpensive molding at home depot or michaels and just cut it the way you need it.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea Bonnie! I was thinking it needed something like that. I also think it needs a flat screen TV above it, but the Mr. feels differently. :)
ReplyDeletelove this! Love this!
ReplyDeletenew follower now too! love your family photo at top of blog!
